Hi, I’m Matthew Watkins. I’ve been writing about Magic regularly for 8 years, and I’m most well known for writing the Ars Arcanum series over on PureMTGO. Lately I’ve also been writing weekly flashback draft primers on the LRCast Subreddit. You can follow my musings about Magic, politics, movies, books, and association football over on Twitter.
My MTG resume isn’t that deep. In my early adult life I made the decision to get married, have kids, and start my profession instead of grinding Magic tournaments, so I’ve never gotten a chance to compete at the level I would like. I’ve made some deep GP runs, I have a 100% PPTQ top 8 rate, and I’ve gotten up to a 1950 rating on MTGO, but mostly I’m satisfied with being my local end boss. At this point I have almost not desire to make competitive MTG a profession, though I would of course like to play on the PT just to validate my skills as a player to the rest of the world, but I’m content being one of those players that most players underestimate and that occasionally makes a deep run at a tournament.
On top of all this, I’m also a high school English teacher. I teach 9th graders and 10th graders, and I love literature and linguistics. I’m fluent in Spanish since I lived in Chile for 2.5 years, and I love working with teenagers. They have such incredible passion, and my hope is to help channel and focus that passion into areas where they can make a difference in the world. Even more than that, stories are my one true love. I read a lot of books and watch a lot of films, and I write film criticism in various places around the internet. For about 2 years I cohosted the now defunct All in the Telling podcast with my good friend Zachary Orts, where we talked about stories in all kinds of different media, as well as how stories impact our lives.
Thanks for checking out my blog! Feel free to leave a comment or hit me up on Twitter with any questions.
